Pigs

Here at Foxhill Pedigree Pigs we currently have four breeds of pig. Each breed has been selected for specific reasons.

Firstly, the Middle White, this is our primary pork pig. Currently there is high demand for meat with good eating qualities and the Middle White delivers this in vast quantities. This has led to Middle White meat appearing on menus of top London restaurants, with “glowing reports” regarding its outstanding quality. The patron of the Middle White Pig Breeders Club is TV chef, Antony Worrall Thompson.

The Tamworth is a very distinctive pig, with large pricked ears and glossy red coat. This pig produces tremendous bacon and hams. It is one of the oldest breeds in the country with a close resemblance to the Wild Boar. It is a very hardy pig that does well outside all year round. They make excellent mothers producing lots of milk and are very protective of their young.
The British Saddleback pigs we keep at Foxhill Pedigree Pigs are of the Essex bloodlines. These are extremely rare pigs and at one point were so rare that the breed was amalgamated in 1967 with Wessex Saddlebacks. This became the British Saddleback breed. There was a single case of a breeder named John Crowshaw that refused to breed his pigs with Wessex Saddlebacks and therefore kept a limited number of pure bred Essex pigs. Our Essex pigs are direct descendants of Crowshaws herd. We mainly sell pure Essex breeding stock from our herd but any pigs that don’t meet the breed standard are used in our Rare Breed Essex Sausages.
Finally, one of the most popular of the rare breeds is The Gloucestershire Old Spots. Its white coat has large, clearly defined black spots. It has a very fine carcass and produces top quality meat for all purposes be it pork chops, roasting joints or sausages. Meat from The Gloucestershire Old Spots is in high demand from the more discerning public that are sick and tired of eating low quality factory farmed pork. Again, sows make very good mothers and are very happy living outside all year round.
